have you enjoyed the warmer past few days as much as i have? i know many of us love when spring comes, but i also know that there are many who enjoy the cold months. march and april tend to be the "yo yo" months — one day it is in the 40s and the next it could be up to 80 degrees. you could almost say these months have a little something for everyone.

while, for some, this may wreak havoc on your mind, it is important, i think, to remember that mother nature is in charge here and she does know what she is doing. our world is a finely tuned instrument. there is a reason and purpose for the "yo yo" temperatures in march and april, but we should also be aware of how our actions impact her. as many of you know, april 22 is earth day, and while you may not consider yourself an environmentalist, it is important to understand how our choices and actions impact those around us.

i am not someone who likes to be preachy, nor do i like to be preached at, but i do encourage you to take into account the yama of ahimsa. it means non-violence, and people tend to interpret this as the practice of being a vegetarian. i see it as the moral principle of lessening your negative impact on the world, as well as your own view/treatment of yourself and others.

on the mat, i encourage ahimsa with the practice of being kind to yourself, knowing your edge and testing it, but not forcing yourself beyond it. off the mat, this can be something very simple to put into practice — but its impact can be great. how can you lessen your negative impact? maybe, for some, that means being a vegetarian — but are there other things/practices you can do as well?

recycling is one that most of us have come to do, and it helps that our local municipalities have recycling pickup. but you can also lessen your impact by using energy-efficient light bulbs — how easy is that? the up-front cost is higher, but in the long run they save you money on your bills and they last a lot longer. another thing that i just learned about is unplugging all those chargers when you are not actually charging your phone/ipod/video camera, etc. once again, it's so simple, but the result has a large impact!

now, i am by no means perfect, but the important thing is i try to find what i can do and move forward from there. we do have at the studio a basket for plastic bottles to be recycled, we use energy-efficient light bulbs in our lamps, we have the tranquiliT line, which is made from bamboo, and we will soon be selling sticky yoga mats that are eco-friendly. it is the small things we all do that will make the biggest impact, and that can be negative or positive depending on the action taken.

in honor of spring and in honor of earth day, look around and see what changes you can make both on and off the mat to impact the world around you in a positive manner.

blessings,
siobhan troy

sally mannixsally mannix

greetings, tranquil space community! i am honored to be the tranquiliTeam player for this wonderful month of april.

i often joke that my yogic journey started way back in the '70s when my mother did yoga with me in her belly, and, indeed, yoga has continually woven its way in and out of my life. since i started taking classes at tranquil space bethesda over a year ago, i have both deepened my involvement in the tranquil space community — through being a studio assistant, taking workshops and venturing over to classes in dupont — and deepened my understanding of yoga as a whole — by increasing my exposure to meditation and eastern religions. what i have observed is that many facets of yoga are embodied here in the tranquil space community.

i am continually impressed by the dedication of our students who i see journey through our many classes, workshops, and trainings — and some of whom have even become my favorite yoga teachers! i deeply admire both siobhan and kimberly, not only for leading both this beautiful community and a well-run business, but also for living their lives with a continual expression of what they are passionate about in this world.

during this month of april, a time of new growth and beginnings, i'd like to close by recognizing what started this community and has kept it growing. as an adult, with real world responsibility pulling from every direction, i struggle with how easy it is to loose sight of the dreams and passions that were so prevalent in our minds as children. tranquil space is a community that supports us in maintaining touch with the joys in our lives, whether our passion is yoga or yoga gives us the balance in life needed to pursue our dreams and passions. thanks to each of you for being part of this lovely community!

i took my very first yoga class in the summer of 2004 at tranquil space. after many, many years of "running only," my body rejoiced at the opportunity to twist and bend in new positions. indeed, yoga has helped me find an essential balance in my fitness routine. since becoming pregnant last summer, i've been practicing not only for me, but also for the health and well-being of my growing baby. i write this note just four days away from my due date, feeling stronger and more flexible than i was at the start of my pregnancy. my husband and i want to thank all of the teachers at tranquil space bethesda for their encouragement and help during this exciting personal time. the opportunity to practice with you has been a gift!

ayurveda is an ancient indian healing art. for the linguistically inclined among you, the word ayurveda is a compound noun, and consists of "ayur" = "life," and "veda" = "science, knowledge." hence, ayurveda is often translated as science of life, but the more i learn about it and practice it, the more i feel that "knowing how to live" would be another appropriate translation and really describes the essence of the practice.

every day, we are faced with myriad choices about our health, body, about how we live. we largely can choose what we eat, decide if and how we exercise, can to some extent determine how full we pack our schedule.

at the same time, we are bombarded with a mass amount of advice. new diets are announced every week it seems, self-help books advise us on how to spend and organize our time, and there is certainly no a lack of exercise choices in this modern world.

yet, with the number of recommendations, confusion grows. why does the diet with which my neighbor lost 12 pounds in three weeks not make any my waist line any smaller? why does my husband thrive on a raw food diet, while it leaves me restless and ungrounded — and hungry? why are all my colleagues enjoying their lunchtime run, while it just leaves me distraught and exhausted, unable to focus on the afternoon tasks?

ayurveda offers us a framework of understanding ourselves that can help us make wise choices for ourselves, choices that allow us to cultivate a sense of balance in our life at every level: body, mind, soul.

ayurveda will not disburse pat advice, but will first determine a person's constitutional body type (called dosha). the three main types are vata (related to the elements of air and ether; the energy of movement and change), pitta (related to the elements of fire and water; the energy of transformation, digestion), and kapha (related to the elements of water and earth; the energy of matter and resistance).

recommendations for lifestyle and diet will then be made based on the dominant constitutional body energy and can vary widely. they will be tailored to the individual — their needs and preferences and particular imbalances. these changes can be gradually incorporated into your life and can help you cultivate a different understanding of yourself and find more peace, harmony and balance.

if you would like to learn more about ayurveda and/or determine your dosha, i offer consultations at tranquil space bethesda and the dupont studio, along with a thai yoga bodywork. please email me at anne@tranquilspace.com.
