siobhan and isabellanon attachment is one of the yogic principles that is laid out in the yoga sutras. the concept being that to not have attachment to things allows us to be one step closer to finding our true self and samadhi (ecstasy or joy).

it is something i, like most of us, struggle with and it is mostly my attachment to those things that make up who i am. as you may know the dupont studio will be moving into a new larger space come may. it is very exciting and having taught both at the church on 16th and then the current space for six years come may, i do have some attachments to my classes. i have taught on monday nights since we moved into the current space five years ago and have taught the 6 pm yoga 2 the whole time. i also teach the 7:30 pm yoga 3 and have done that for almost as long. with some schedule changes and needs i and kevin (one of the fabulous teachers there) are switching classes.

i am happy to do it but there were a few moments of not wanting to let go of my classes. i tend to have a great deal of ownership over the classes i teach and hence have a great emotional attachment to them. i experienced this recently at bethesda too when i gave my tuesday night 7:30 pm class to september. my hesitation or anxiety had nothing to do with who was taking over the class but my emotional attachment and “ownership” over them.

now like all things in the yoga sutras there is a balance to be had. some attachment is healthy since that is how we build relationships. what we should watch for is when that attachment overrides what is best for all involved that is when we should recognize that there is an underlining issue that is holding us back. letting go is how we grow.

is there something in your life that you should let go of? a good example would be is there a past situation where you were not treated fairly, does the thought of it still irritate or upset you? if so, then that is an attachment to something that does not serve you at this time. you can and should learn from the situation but keeping your attachment to the irritation or your feelings does not. when you recognize this in yourself or actions don’t allow that critical voice to chime in. instead recognize what you are holding on to and then ask yourself why. then work toward letting it go.

may you have an april with less attachments to those things that no longer serve you well!

namaste,
siobhan

i started my yoga journey about 9 years ago. when non-yogis hear this, they say “wow - you must be pretty flexible.” i have to tell them, “not really – i have lots of tight and problem areas in my body. but yoga has helped me to feel better about myself. i’ve improved my core-strength and have learned to be more in-tuned to my body.” they are always surprised to hear this. i think there’s this misconception that only flexible people can do yoga? but i have noticed in the past couple of years that i am a little more flexible in some poses like pigeon. one of the many things i love about tsb is that there’s no competition. the teachers are always reminding us to only go as far as your body will let you and don’t try to do what your neighbor is doing because our bodies are all different. i totally agree! i’m the person you see at the end of class during head / shoulder stand and plow lying on my back with my legs up the wall. i have learned over the years that my body just can’t do those poses due to shoulder and neck issues. and you know what, it’s okay! the teachers at tsb have taught me to listen to my body and appreciate what i can and can’t do. just recently in september’s class i was able to do a full wheel (with her lovely assistance). i was very shaky in the full pose, but i did it (hurray!!), and it has taken me 9 years to get that far. tsb has a wonderful nurturing atmosphere that i’m happy to be apart of. thanks to all the lovely teachers, studio assistances and fellow yogis who make tsb a tranquil place.

i came to tranquil space bethesda a year ago, rather desperately searching for a way to deal with a high stress job i did not like but found myself doing 12 hours a day, and the fatigue and stress of caring for a sick parent and a sick dog (who is my canine soul mate). i had a very "simple" goal: to quiet my mind and open my heart. i think that was the only dedication i made for my practice for at least 9 months! slowly but surely, i have made progress on my goal. when my brain took a time out and i was able to listen to my heart, i found a new, more peaceful path: i am leaving my job as a corporate lawyer at the end of June to open a warm water therapy center for dogs. my dog and my mother are doing much better, and my husband has a much nicer wife! i am very thankful to all my fellow yogis, my mat and all my teachers, especially september, for helping me learn to have compassion for myself -- which has enabled me to have more compassion for others -- and for helping me realize that perfection was a pretty silly thing to be striving for in the first place.
