“if you ever saw a heat wave,
would you wave back?” ~ steven wright

record heat wave for us here in the dc area, and, it seems, around most of the country. how does one stay cool during this time — especially if you are someone who does not enjoy the heat? in ayurveda they discuss or advise on how to keep the body in balance in the summertime, and actually throughout the year. it is good to stick to cooling foods; unfortunately, that does not usually include ice cream or other dairy products, but does include fruit (a yummie all-fruit smoothie anyone?), salads, chilled herbal teas, and, of course, lots of water.

as for your practice, you may want to treat yourself to some cooling poses — and what can be especially nice are some restorative poses. one that can be very settling is supta baddha konasana — lie on your back with the soles of the feet together and knees open to the sides, place pillows or a blanket or yoga blocks under your knees to support them — then just relax. sarvangasana (shoulderstand) and viparita karani (legs up the wall) are also cooling poses, and, as an added bonus, both help calm the nervous system. you can also come to a cooling breath by curling the tongue as you inhale. if you can't curl your tongue, just make an "o" shape with your lips. this can be especially helpful if you are taking a more vigorous practice and start to feel a bit too heated. coming back to a yoga 1 or a slow flow class can also be a treat for the overheated soul. we are more limber in the summer, but remember that balance is the key. don't push yourself beyond where the body is ready to go.

the heat, for some, may be very energizing, but when we start to get to the high temps with high humidity (and don't forget — our air quality goes downhill on days like these), it is best to forgo the "machismo" attitude to "push" through and give your body time to rest and cool. there is a reason why people who live in the south tend to have a slower lifestyle: it is too darn hot most of the year to be rushing around! luckily for us, there is usually a break at some point even in august. so hang in there. even those of us carrying a little yogi in the womb can find relief in a nice cool bath or pool!

enjoy this summer month of august!

blessings,
siobhan troy

claudia zambranoclaudia zambrano

seven months ago, my husband and i arrived to the states from ecuador. we came to start a new chapter in our lives; promptly we noticed that this one will be an extraordinary one . . . we found out that we are expecting our first baby! it was amazing: a new phase of our lives, a new journey, and a new miracle resulting of our existence together. one day, looking for the best ways to prepare for my little baby, i found out that prenatal yoga is an empowerment tool that will help me to prepare for these changes physically and spiritually. that's how i started at tranquil space bethesda, a place in which i have learned — as a student and a studio assistant — that yoga is not only stretching movements, but also a practice for life.

yoga let me know that our spirit is powerful and it depends only on us to use it for our own and beloved ones' sakes. my husband accompanies me in this practice, and i am very joyful for that. there is a quote from elizabeth kübler-ross that describes how yoga has touched our lives: "people are like stained-glass windows. they sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within." that light is our spirit, and it enlightens us when we encounter obstacles, and it teaches us that as soon as we have health, love, and a reason to smile, everything else will come naturally. . . . for now, of course, my main reason to smile is the tiny precious one inside my belly.

beth kennanbeth kennan

i started taking yoga classes about two years ago. who knew that two years later i would be completely hooked! it all began at the suggestion of my doctor, who said that if i went three times a week, the benefits would not only be improving a bad back, but i would gain strength and flexibility and overall feel a much better. now i go to yoga class as much as i can, probably more then three times a week, and find myself talking about it with friends and co-workers, encouraging them to go.

i don't think i have ever been to the same class at either dupont or bethesda; each class has a little variation, and allows me to try something new and different. i like yoga, because you are never finished growing with each pose. the time on the yoga mat allows me to slow down and take a break from the day, and start each day with a fresh outlook.

i am glad to be a part of tranquil space and thankful for everyone at both the dupont and bethesda studios. thank you for the opportunity to learn so much, and to continue to grow in my practice, which i am sure will continue for years to come.
