siobhan and isabellahave you ever caught yourself analyzing what is in someone else’s shopping cart? i think we have all done this at some point especially when food shopping. can you remember what you were thinking? i know that i have noticed a man in front of me with what i would term “single guy” food: a couple of meat products in small portions, bread, chips, cookies, and then on occasion one will have fresh fruit and vegetables. then i have seen the person with bulk grains, lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, cheese, loaf of whole wheat bread, and then maybe the indulgence of sorbet.

now the interesting thing or the non yogic thing about my observations is that we make assumptions about those people. i obviously made the assumption that the first person is single, but he could also be visiting from out of town. you may also assume the second person is the one living a healthy life and maybe does yoga. but we don’t really know who the person is and while human nature is to make assumptions it is best to try to let go of those assumptions. the person who has the grains, veggies, etc. could be a person who has some other unhealthy habit.

in the june 2008 issue of yoga journal there was a piece called “the mystery shopper” and told of seeing a grandmother purchasing cupcakes, ramen noodles, and artificial lemonade for her three grandkids. now one could automatically think that she is going to send those grandkids on one big sugar high, or how unhealthy but you come to find out that her three grandkids are serving in iraq. the author than switches from a place of judgment to one of complete sympathy, ending with “those young men could eat anything they wanted, and with my blessings.”

many of us do try to eat healthy but it is not always easy and we have no idea what someone else’s situation is when we look at their shopping cart. we don’t know what their dietary or financial needs/restrictions are and we do hear that obesity is on the rise in children in this country. but leading by example is much more positive way to move about in this world. i think we can all agree that there is already too much judgment flying around us even if it is not said verbally, you can just feel that negative energy.

so when you find your eyes and thoughts wandering to someone else’s cart bring the focus back to your own and ask if you are truly meeting your own body’s needs? once again this is taking your yoga practice off the mat and using the principles in our everyday life. we all have our weakness (chocolate, coffee, salty chips) but our weaknesses are only one small part of our whole.

namaste,
siobhan

gina kelley turned me on to yoga. my husband and i took her series of newbie yogi classes at the dupont studio. i loved her. i loved yoga. she became my hero. i took her class faithfully on wednesday.

then she moved to charlottesville, virginia. how could she leave? i was just getting the hang of it. i started going to yoga sporadically. then i heard about the studio assistant position and thought it sounded like a good way to stay connected to yoga. work every other saturday for 4 hours a month and get 4 classes in return. kind of like volunteering, but better.

i’m a better yogi since i started being a studio assistant because it keeps my practice in the forefront and keeps me regular. when gina showed our newbie class how to do pigeon the first time, i thought: “she must be double jointed. no normal person can do that.” one year later, i can do pigeon, too. and i’m not double jointed. i actually like pigeon now. but my favorite pose remains “legs up the wall.”

asana of the month

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons..

supta virasanasupta virasana (reclining hero)

benefits

  • this is a cooling pose that will give the quads an intense stretch as well as stretching the hips, abs, and knees.
  • can also help digestion.

my practice, during almost the last two years at tranquil space bethesda, has been an experience beyond the best of my expectations. knowing nothing about yoga, having not a clue about it, my first class was a total mess. however, i kept going and started a process, which has taught me not only asanas but also the powerful connection between my mind and my body.

after a chaotic day, nothing works out better for me than a transition to the mat, where the priorities change and become only breathing, balance, alignment and the present moment.

the benefits of practicing are endless, but i might say that the feeling of a clear mind and a peaceful body are the biggest achievements.

thanks so much to marianne, september, kevin, kimberly and andrea for showing me a pathway of healing, challenge, and awareness. namaste.

when i talk to people about acupuncture they often say, “that sounds great! i will definitely give it a try when something is wrong with me.” when you are not at your optimal health, it is true; acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment. the national institute of health (NIH) and the world health organization (WHO) have recognized acupuncture as a viable treatment for over 50 symptoms and aliments including: anxiety, fertility issues, pms, back and head ache and others. but, you may not know that acupuncture is also a great way to stay healthy. yes, there have been studies to prove that acupuncture can improve your immunity (study by the american college of acupuncture & oriental medicine and department of health & human performance at the university of houston 2007) but i am talking about total wellness body, mind, and spirit.

what is total wellness? i think wellness is when you can pause at the stresses of life (an ache here, a bad day there) and instead of the stresses being a part of the big picture of your life they are just a little “huh, look at that!” not only do you benefit but the people around you benefit from it also. your partner does not get snapped at for leaving the dishes in the sink and you have all the patience in the world for your 3 year at 6am (even if you are not a morning person).

acupuncture works as a gentle reminder that you know exactly how to stay healthy and all of your symptoms are your teachers (we all have symptoms even when we are well). the benefits are better sleep, more awareness of your body, feeling relaxed, more energy and those are just the side effects!

acupuncture can help you live your life with greater ease. if you have any questions about how acupuncture can help you please email me ngina@tranquilspacebethesda.com or call me 301-213-9329 and we can come up with a plan to help you relax and enjoy your journey to greater health and wellness.
