have
you told us what you think
with our
online survey?
it is short, sweet & we
want to hear from you.
|
i heard a crazy report on the news
the other day and it was about how
to go on vacation and not be wired.
i found it very amusing and scary
that there was a “need” to report
a “how to” to take a vacation and
not do work.
it seems we (as a society in general)
have become obsessive about staying
in touch. we have our laptops, cell
phones that also download emails,
instant messages, etc. why do we
feel the need to be “available”
24/7?
if we really think about it the
world will continue and if we don’t
as individuals set boundaries as
to when we work and when it is personal
time then no one else will do it
for us. brahmacharya comes to mind
here, the yama of moderation.
now i admit that when i am at home
i tend to check email frequently
throughout the day. since i work
from home that is to be expected
but since having isabella my constraint,
or maybe it is my gift, is that
i cannot answer emails as quickly.
i have learned that it is okay 99%
of time to wait until later to answer
emails and/or return phone calls.
the world will go on and it does
so amazingly well with or without
me.
in a book that i frequently read
from at the end of class, richard
carlson, phd says that our in box
will never be empty. there will
always be work and the more you
do the more others expect from you.
now i don’t mean for us to start
being selfish but do notice how
much of your time is being consumed
by work. i have asked this before,
do you live to work? or do you work
to live?
our work should be part of our identity
but i personally don’t believe it
should be your identity. i am a
yoga teacher but i am also a wife,
mother, sister, daughter, business
owner, friend and a person who wants
to leave a positive mark on our
world. how many emails i respond
to in one day does not define me,
it is a part of who i am (business
owner) but it is not my whole being.
being connected all the time does
not give me a greater sense of accomplishment,
in actuality it tends to be stressful
since i am not able to get it all
done in one day.
my goal while i was away was to
not stay in touch 24/7. owning a
business does mean thinking about
it 24/7 but if we don’t take some
time to rest, like take a vacation,
then we just start running on empty.
even our creative side needs a breather.
so, with the wind down of the summer
see if you can not check email or
answer work related calls for one
whole weekend. for some this will
be no problem as you have a good
handle on brahmacharya. but for
those of us that feel we have to
be “one step ahead” see how it feels
to not focus on work for two days.
i would not be surprised to find
out that you are actually more productive
come monday than normal.
many peaceful moments to you!
namaste

i have practiced yoga at gyms on
and off for a few years. last november,
i was thrilled to start practicing
yoga in a different, more tranquil
environment. I am still excited
by all of the small details that
make practicing at tranquil space
such a remarkable experience (especially
the lavender spray during savasana).
outside of tranquil space, i often
find myself fighting my body; fighting
to keep it awake, make it eat more
good foods, less junk foods, make
it go to bed, and wake up again.
my body loves stepping into the
yoga studio; it knows this is the
time when my mind will stop talking
and listen to what my body wants.
i love the feeling of joy and peace
I feel after yoga class when the
body is in tune with the mind. gradually
and with more practice, i am able
to hold on to that sense of peace
outside of tranquil space.
thank you to all the wonderful teachers
and yogis who make tranquil space
such a welcoming and peaceful environment.

i have taken yoga very intermittingly
since I was at law school
in berkeley in the late
1970s. i discovered the
tranquil space bethesda
almost a year ago thanks
to september. i am beyond
thrilled to have finally
found the studio since it
is exactly what i am looking
for -- challenging classes,
a perfect amount of reflective
time, diverse and soothing
music, convenient location,
and most importantly excellent
teachers.
i am amazed at how the studio
has such dedicated and consistent
teachers yet at the same
time i am still able to
learn something new at every
class -- like yesterday
andrea taught the class
how to roll their tongues
to make for a cooling breath.
my main problem with the
studio is that it has made
me wish i could take yoga
everyday and I get frustrated
when the rest of my life
interferes. but i am not
complaining about the rest
of my life which includes
a busy health law practice,
16 and 20 year old daughters,
a husband with bad knees
who could never do a downward
dog, and a real dog ( half
poodle half golden) who
loves to be walked.

what is reiki? many have asked this
question. reiki is a japanese word
which loosely translates to mean
"universal life energy." a practitioner
simply lays his or her hands over
various areas of the body and channels
beneficial healing energy to the
recipient.
I genuinely look forward to giving
a reiki session. the technique itself
is so simple and yet the sense of
peacefulness is so profound that
even after several years as a reiki
practitioner i am often surprised.
many of my clients come to reiki
feeling exhausted and anxious and
leave with a deeper sense of relaxation
and a lighter sense of self.
reiki has been a wonderful gift
in my life. it has allowed me the
chance to step outside of the busyness
and often chaotic ramblings of the
mind into that place of effortless
being. the more i practice the more
i see this effortless being leaking
out into my own life as i meet challenges
from a place of calm. i am deeply
grateful for the gift of reiki and
to the many teachers in my life
who urged me to pursue it.

the unfolding of a creative
yoga practice that is carried
off the yoga mat into one's
daily life.
the
vision of tranquil space
is to use yoga as a catalyst
to live life fully and consciously
