siobhan and isabellawell, here it is the end of 2007! december just smacks of festive spirit doesn’t it? and i don’t just refer to all the decorations that you see in all the stores but there is an excitement at this time of year. i just love that people tend to think just a bit more about how they interact with others and having chillier weather brings a crispness to the air too.

what can and does happen at this time of year is stress, meeting the end of the year deadlines, the socializing (while fun can be tiresome by the end of the month), the expectations of giving gifts, travel, and even the feeling that you have to meet someone else’s expectation of what this time of year should be. now that can be a friend or relative that expects lots of gifts or the person who expects your presence at their gathering when all you want to do is curl up at home with a delicious cup of hot chocolate/tea/cider.

the other thing that happens is we forget to take care of ourselves at this time of year and that can be more draining than anything else. even with the hectic schedule of work, holiday parties, family we have to take some time for ourselves. so, before you say yes to all those invitations and expectations sit down with your schedule and carve out time for yourself. try to find some balance between what you really need to do (we all have holiday expectations that cannot be avoided), what you want to do and then when you are going to give yourself some you time.

our bodies instinctively want to hibernate at this time of year so not giving yourself some you time will only make our inner grinch appear (we are human so we all have this side of ourselves). make a list of what recharges you and work to do one of those activities at least once every day. some of mine are:

1. take a yoga class (this has to be added to my list since having my little girl as before I did do this several times a week)
2. curl up with your brain candy (a light novel, a magazine, a catalog)
3. sip wine, tea or hot chocolate while you do nothing else
4. take a walk (for me it is with my first child – my dog)
5. sit and be completely present with your significant other even if you don’t talk
6. take a nap

i wish you a low stress holiday season, as well as i hope more of us realize that in order to be completely present we have to make time for ourselves.

happy holidays to you and your family from,
siobhan, marco, & isabella

as yoga called my name for two years straight and i never paid any attention – until one of my friends convinced me to try tranquil space.

i had tried yoga a few times before, but after the last experience – featuring a stark, bare studio with a cold floor and a frighteningly thin and frighteningly hardcore instructor – i had come to the conclusion that yoga was just not for me. however, my friend tiffany refused to accept that answer and after about six months of hard selling, i finally decided to check out tranquil space for myself.

pink? carpet? soothing sandlewood scents? tea and cookies post practice? this i could get into. after a few weeks i was fully into the flow – exploring mindful extravagance, learning yoga postures, feeling more calm in my daily life, and loving the community i found at the studio. now, it’s my turn to bring someone else into the fold…

sharon: tranquil space has been fantastic for challenging me both physically and mentally. i used to take class with siobhan back in the glen echo days. not long after she started up tranquil space bethesda, i stopped attending classes because of a shoulder injury and work conflicts. but, i never forgot about siobhan’s classes and this lovely sounding place that offered tea and cookies after class. eventually, i changed jobs and finally had the time for yoga. now, i just needed to go. i took a couple of classes in march and enjoyed them immensely but i knew for this to stick, i was going to need a buddy to attend class with me…

stacey: i attended my first yoga class at tranquil space bethesda with sharon last april. as a good friend and coworker she knew that i needed to find some inner peace and balance. after just a few sessions with marianne and geri, i knew that yoga was a great fit for me. over the past six months, my yoga practice has helped me to slow down, reflect, and connect my mind with my body. i’m very thankful that sharon introduced me to yoga and tranquil space, and i think that we both agree that we just can’t get enough of that “therapeutic discomfort!”

staying healthy in the winter
acupuncture is based on the five elements that express in the seasons: fire (red) is summer,
earth (yellow) is late summer/harvest, metal (white) is autumn, water (blue-black) is winter,
and wood (green) is spring.

winter is time of the year to go inwards, to conserve our energy and replenish ourselves. it is the time that nature sets aside for stillness, rest, renewal and the accumulation of power needed for the bursting-forth of spring. chinese medicine reminds us that we need to live in accordance with nature, instead of fighting it. this leads to health.

physical level
our bodies are primarily made out of water. every cell must be lubricated and cleansed. the organs associated with the water element are the kidneys and bladder. imbalance may show up as a disturbance in these organs, or in the fluid balances of the body (dry skin, profuse sweating or edema).

emotional level
water controls the fluidity of our emotions. the primary emotion associated with water is fear. when the water element is out of balance you may been frozen with fear, experience panic attacks, or insomnia. conversely you may feel fearless, and risk too much without proper caution and judgment.

mental level
the mental aspect of water shows up as fluidity in taking on life’s challenges. are you able to go with the flow, or do you find yourself feeling brittle and inflexible? on the mental level,

water governs skill and ability. thinking clearly, and gives us the ability to be grounded, calm and clear. when water is out of balance one may experience stubbornness, rigidity and chaos in their lives.

spiritual level
water give us the courage to manifest who we are at our core. the word associated with water is “will”—it is the power that motivates us, moves us, and gives us endurance during hard times. without will, we may feel despair and unending sadness.

practical advice for winter:

  • rest more. conserve your energy by doing quiet activities.

  • go to bed earlier than other times of the year. a good night’s rest gives us energy during the day.

  • schedule some down time to check in with yourself: yoga, meditation, and journaling will nourish you.

  • drink plenty of water, divide your body weight by two and aim to drink that many ounces of water every day.

  • eat seasonal foods—stews, root vegetables, meats, warming and nourishing foods.

  • use warming spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, garlic and ginger. these will help warm your stomach and will promote digestion.

  • drink hot liquids. tea, hot chocolate, spiced cider all help warm you.

  • keep the back of your neck covered from wind, and do not go outside with wet hair.

  • take note of when you feel fear or caution to see what your body is telling you

  • allow yourself to plan and dream without taking action. winter is the time of quiet preparation for spring. bethesda.
