“our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure.” ~ marianne williamson
yes, february is the "month of love" where we see pink, red, candy hearts and cupids everywhere. this is a time where it is very easy to get wrapped up into the idea of love but how we can go beyond the idea of it and incorporate love into our life everyday. i am not just referring to the love we have for our romantic interests but the love we have for ourself.
it is interesting to notice if you are nicer to others then you are to yourself. it seems easier to tell someone else what their self worth is but how often do we tell ourselves how smart, talented, and fabulous we are. now this may seem on the border of conceit but i am referring more to the idea of loving ourselves with humility and recognizing our innate goodness.
yoga is very much the practice of starting with ourselves and learning about who we are which can be a scary prospect. what can be scary is recognizing the limitless potential we have inside of us. initially we would think that recognizing our "dark" side would be scary but when we recognize our innate goodness then there is an expectation we think we have to live up to. when it should be very easy, we are innately good so we just need to let that true self shine through.
Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate,
but that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.
It is not just in some; it is in everyone.
And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give
other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.
~ marianne williamson, from her book a return to love
the greater the love and respect you have for yourself, the greater the love and respect you have for others. there are couple of ways this month to show and share that love and respect with partner yoga on the 12th and you can also express your love for your furry friend by spending the 19th with me for a benefit for the montgomery county humane society.
whatever your plans for valentine's day start it by sending yourself a valentine!
blessings and love,
siobhan troy

in august, as i was pounding the pavement in preparation for the 30th annual marine corps marathon, i found my muscles tightening up under the pressure and realized i needed to get back to yoga. the previous summer i found myself awake and in a yoga studio at 6 a.m. twice a week. i thought, perhaps, i had lost my mind. but really, i was so thoroughly enjoying my practice that i didn't realize i was up before the sun! when i relocated to d.c., somewhere in the mix, yoga had failed make a reappearance in my life. surfing the web one day looking for activities in d.c., i found that the tranquil space bethesda studio was advertising for studio assistants and it seemed fated for me. i soon was working every thursday night at the studio in the church, enjoying my time in the peaceful environment and reaping the benefits of a consistent practice. it was a great alternative to my stress filled work day.
it has been almost three months now since i crossed the finish line of the marathon and i have started to really dedicate myself to my practice and, in turn, have discovered a new dimension within my body and myself. not only have i reaped the physical benefits of this new found hobby, i have been able to find my "tranquil space within!" i walk out of yoga in my post-yoga "fog" and meander a little more peacefully through life. my time at tranquil space bethesda helps me to keep my life balanced; to slow down and enjoy each moment. i love the tranquil touches, the ambience, and siobhan's positive energy and personal touch with each of her students. working as a studio assistant has also afforded me the ability to help to reciprocate what i have received through my yoga practice and short time spent working at tranquil space bethesda. i want others to experience the great things ts bethesda can offer and i love being a cheerleader for the cause! i can't imagine days without yoga now, and am so happy to have become a part of the tranquil space bethesda team. i am honored to be considered ts bethesda team player of the month. namaste.

we have been friends since our days in college, when we were roommates and members of the same sorority. after college, we experienced so much: demanding jobs/studies; geographic differences; boyfriends; major career changes; landing great jobs; breakups; weddings; many, many moves; two-hour commutes and serious family illnesses. over the years, and in dealing with our individual trials, we realized what we really needed was each other and some serious stress relief.
laura: i began practicing yoga almost two years ago in annapolis when a friend suggested i join her for a class, and i immediately fell in love with it. a major career change brought me to dc, and shortly thereafter i moved to bethesda. facing a stressful time and feeling the absence of yoga, a co-worker suggested i try tranquil space. one of my first instructors was siobhan, and i was hooked. i loved the challenging and thoughtful classes provided by the tranquil space instructors, and i was grateful for the individual attention and posture corrections that i had not previously received in practicing. yoga took on a whole new look and feel, and provided a much needed outlet. tranquil space is a perfect fit for my lifestyle, and i am thrilled to be associated with the studio.
aimee: last summer, in the midst of a difficult year for both of us, laura encouraged me to begin practicing yoga under the guidance of siobhan, her favorite teacher, at tranquil space bethesda. i'd like to say that my first yoga experience was enlightening, but i'm afraid that it is probably more accurately described as hilarious. with no prior yoga experience, my immediate reaction to many poses was to burst into nervous laughter. when siobhan asked the class to take shoulder stand, i tried several times but ended up laughing and tumbling over like a weeble wobble. i was challenged and inspired. i couldn't stand the fact there was something, anything, that i could not do! that night and the following week, i went home and practiced salamba sarvangasana until, finally, it clicked. i was so proud of myself! since then, i remain intrigued, as no two of siobhan's classes are ever the same, and i encounter a new pose every time i practice yoga.
we are honored to have been selected as co-yogis of the month, and we eagerly look forward to spending time together, practicing yoga at tranquil space and relishing the many benefits that we receive as a result of our efforts.
namaste
