“a little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.”
~ willy wonka, willy wonka and the chocolate factory
|
"so little to do and so much time." wouldn't that be a nice scenario? it is from willy wonka and the chocolate factory one of my favorite movies from childhood, and one that i caught on tv the other day. when did 24 hours become too short of a day? these days i wonder how my mom took care of three kids (the fourth did not come until much later) two years apart from each other, kept the house clean, and still worked part time with no day care.
i even asked her the other day how she managed, and she honestly does not remember. maybe it was so crazy she blocked it out of memory! we weren't bad kids, but we were very active. my respect for my mom has grown since having a child of my own, and i only have one.
which brings me back to: when did 24 hours become too short of a day?
on one hand, i do think we have lost sight of what is really important or, should i say, our priorities are a bit out of whack. now, i know we all see our work as being very important; it pays the bills, and hopefully most of us are doing something we enjoy. but a question to ask is, do you work to live or do you live to work?
you don't have to have kids to ask this question. do you work so that you can live and do the things you love to do travel in asia or europe, go on a safari, go to walt disney world or so you can spend time with those you love? or do you let your work consume you so you don't have time for anything else, not even yourself?
yoga is about finding balance. yoga means union, and we strive to find union between our two sides of the body, to find union between our physical and spiritual selves. pushing yourself beyond where your body is ready or able to go is not practicing ahimsa (non-violence), and we are also not practicing satya (truthfulness). do you "hide" behind your work so you don't have to truly discover yourself? or so you don't have to be alone with your thoughts?
notice what your approach is to your yoga practice. are you able to step on the mat and just notice how you feel, both physically and mentally, at that very moment? then accept where you are at that moment without criticism? if you struggle with this, you more than likely do the same thing in your everyday life off the mat.
at the end of class recently, when i was lying in savasana, my mind starting making a list of things i needed to do before heading home. then i noticed what i was doing and had to literally remind myself that the list can wait. i was not doing myself any favors or saving any time by doing it right then. as a matter of fact, i would be more productive, efficient, and happier if i gave myself those few moments of peace.
i use to think that multi-tasking was an art. now i wonder if it is more of a burden. i do think technology is a big part of why we expect to get more done, but one thing is certain babies don't care about timelines, to-do lists, or the need for getting to a place by a certain time. now that is the life!
blessings,
siobhan troy

many of you know me as a teacher, but actually i wear many hats at the studio. in addition to teaching weekly classes, i also run the baby & me and kids' yoga programs, and beginning this year i have taken on an additional role as studio manager. i am very excited to have the opportunity to take on this new role, and thank siobhan for the support and encouragement she has given me to expand my role at the studio.
being part of the tranquil space bethesda team means a lot to me. i started taking classes at tranquil space bethesda two years ago when i was beginning my journey toward becoming a yoga teacher. what i have always loved about tranquil space bethesda is the sense of community that is an integral part of the tranquil space experience. through my time as both a student and teacher at tranquil space bethesda, i have made many new and close friends, met many kind and loving students, and been supported by a caring community of teachers and yogis. each week, i look forward to meeting new yogis, and helping them to feel a part of our tranquil space community.
i want to end with a few thank yous . . .
first, to all of the studio assistants, thank you for your dedication and hard work. without you, the studio could not run.
to all of the wonderful yogis who attend my classes each week, thank you for your joy and for allowing me to share a little bit of my journey with you. i enjoy hearing your stories over tea and cookies, and seeing you grow each week.
finally, to all of the teachers, thank you for your beautiful and inspiring classes. my practice grows deeper because of all of you.

i began studying yoga seriously when pregnant with my first daughter, michelle (now 24 and also a yogi!). my study of yoga, fairly consistent these past 25 years, has been inspired by the memory of my father, who stood on his head every day and practiced very yoga-like exercises as early as the 1950s and '60s. yoga and meditation have become my oasis for relaxation and restoration of the energy to meet life's ongoing challenges and stresses. in particular, my practice has been helpful in my recovery from breast cancer (4.5-year survivor!). a friend recommended tranquil space about the time the bethesda studio opened and i've loved taking classes here and participating in the workshops. last spring, i took level 1 teacher training to deepen my own practice and explore the possibilities for teaching. i have enrolled in the upcoming level 2 training, and hope to focus on gentle and restorative yoga for my over-50 peer group.
