siobhan and isabellaloving kindness

the phrase loving kindness may be one you have heard in class, it is the idea of "the heart (being) fully awake in friendliness, compassion, and empathic joy" from yoga journal online. it is showing respect or unconditional love toward ourselves and others no matter the situation or circumstance.

loving kindness in all situations, your first reaction to that statement may be similar to mine, that is very challenging if not impossible. but then again if it was easy our world would be a very different place wouldn’t it? i don’t believe that life was meant to be a “walk in the park.” we are meant to learn as we live.

so, february is celebrated as the month of love, which is a wonderful concept so why not think of it as the month of loving kindness too. let yourself be “fully awake in friendliness, compassion, and empathetic joy” toward yourself and others.

as always the yoga mat is a great place to put this into practice. start by observing how you react to the challenges there or how you speak to yourself since this is reflective to how we react and speak to ourselves off the mat. so, start with loving kindness toward yourself on the yoga mat no matter the pose or sequence. let that be your training ground to how to incorporate loving kindness throughout your life.

many blessings,
siobhan troy-carranza

for me, practicing yoga has really brought me home to my body. as we go about our incredibly busy lives, it's easy to forget about our bodies completely when we aren't exerting ourselves physically - say, running to catch the bus - or perhaps when we're sick and miserable and thinking, "oh, my stupid body!" yoga has helped me to reconnect with this living vessel of mine and be totally present in those moments when my body is simply and quietly being. i feel strength in little, understated ways i never expected. i give better hugs now, stand taller, and feel comfortable in whatever space i'm in, whether it's a packed elevator or an empty lecture hall. i feel a definite sense of accomplishment when i finally master an asana, but i'm even more inspired by the ways in which yoga has changed my life off the mat - mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

in the past year, i've really come to cherish and depend on my community of yogis, fellow studio assistants, and wonderful tranquil space teachers. with every pose, every post-class chat session over tea and cookies, and every gentle and encouraging touch of an instructor's hand, i am more excited about this extraordinary journey called life, and more confident that i will be able to meet it's challenges with courage, compassion, and equanimity.

i tried several yoga studios a few years ago, but for one reason or another, they were not a fit and i could not be consistent with my practice. a year and a half ago a friend brought me to tranquil space bethesda and we committed to a yoga practice together. i had been a competitive ballroom dancer for years and really prefer indoor sports. back pain was also a concern for me. i was hoping that the combination of stretching and strengthening would be the right combination. it has been. for me the icing on the cake is learning the technique and alignment of the poses.
