“being satisfied with what we already have is a magical golden key to being alive in a full, unrestricted, and inspired way.” ~ pema chodron, the wisdom of no escape
a new year, a new studio space, and endless possibilities for growth and change. personally i have never been someone to set new year's resolutions probably because throughout the year i think about how can i grow as a person, as a teacher, as a friend and in the past year as business owner with an incredible group of students. i want to offer so much and yet i have to remind myself of patience, not everything has to happen now and actually it is usually much better if it doesn't.
the quote above from the wisdom of no escape is, i feel, a good starting place for the new year and it goes beyond material possessions. the idea of being satisfied with yourself, just the way you are, with all of our imperfections and all of our wonderful attributes. not so easy to accomplish with the endless messages that are sent our way from various sources. so, i encourage you if you do set those new year's resolutions to think about your dreams, think about how your resolution can bring more peace into your life. what is it that will give you the peace to enjoy that walk with your dog in the rain, to find that meditative quality to washing dishes or sitting in traffic.
the yoga mat is a great place to practice finding your peace by noticing how you react to certain poses since this correlates to how we react to situations in our life. it is also a place to start to reprogram those reactions as well as reprogram on how you view yourself. i was a competitive swimmer and soccer player as a kid/teenager where beating the person next you was key. my yoga mat has been my teacher in that it does not matter what the person next to me is doing (though i have always enjoyed celebrating others achievements). what matters is how my mind, body and breath are reacting and that is all i need to know or pay attention to. it is the same in life, our bodies, minds and breath react to situations and if you pay attention to it you will learn how to change your reaction. focus on your breath, deep and full, body and mind will follow and that is where you will find the peace.
the key with any intention or resolution is to take little steps, if you simple notice that you react to bakasana (crow pose) the same way you react to situations where you need to stand up for yourself then you have already started. celebrate that step and then see where your next step leads.
i look forward to sharing the journey of 2006 with you and i wish you all the best on and off the mat.
happy and joyful new year,
siobhan troy

i started doing yoga for a couple of reasons: one, i had been curious about it when i was still living in austin, tx, but a friend told me i was too energetic for yoga and since i thought she knew what she was talking about i did not pursue it. silly me. that was 1994. then enter 2001, when i thought about it again especially when my fiance's doctor suggested it would be good for his back. well, now i had a mission as well as a curiosity.
i called a couple of studios, but there were not a whole lot of choices then. i came across tranquil space's website (which has evolved and grown by leaps and bounds). i called the number; kimberly answered the phone, and was so friendly that i thought it was a good place to start. marco and i went to class together and were both surprised on how challenging it was, and by my third class i was completely hooked!
marco continued once a week, while i was attending class four times a week. this is when the dupont studio was in a church on 16th street and there was only class four days a week. in november of 2001, marco and i were the yogis of the month before there were photos (which i think i am happy about). marco was telling everyone, while i was starting to wonder about teaching yoga. walking home after class, i posed this to marco and decided i would have to ask kimberly how she started teaching and why. before i got the chance, kimberly offered her first level 1 teacher training in 2002.
i do believe in timing and we discover things when the time is right. i now know that teaching yoga is my calling/passion/joy, but in 1994 i would not have been open to it like i was in 2001. my life as a fundraiser gave me some great life experience and brought me to dc in 1996, where i knew i was going to find my life partner. what i did not realize when i first attended that yoga class was how much yoga was going to shape me, nor would i have imagined being where i am now. life is not supposed to be easy, but yoga sure has made the ride a bit smoother.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

my first experience practicing yoga came as a guest at a tranquil space picnic last summer, and i was immediately hooked. in the short few months i have been practicing, i have learned that my body can be strong and flexible in ways i would never have believed before. more importantly, i have learned that this is true of my mind and spirit as well. things and events that would once have driven me into a fit of frustration (beltway traffic, malfunctioning computers) i can now move past with a few deep breaths and a gentle reminder that this is not the end of the world. and while this response is no more perfect than any of my poses, even these few steps towards more fully uncovering my own "tranquil space" are of great comfort to me. i look forward to many happy hours in our beautiful new space in bethesda and many more happy, healthy hours outside of it as a result.
