siobhan and isabellawell, do you feel a huge sigh of relief that the holiday season is over? or do you suffer from sadness? i usually feel a bit of both. a sense of relief that things will get back to a more normal routine but then i always find it sad to see the decorations being taken down and put off un-decorating my christmas tree for as long as possible.

then there is the thinking that january brings new beginnings and opportunities. well, yes that is a positive spin on it but isn’t that what each new day brings us too? every day that we wake up is a new opportunity. sometimes that new opportunity might be something big like a new job or career, a baby, a new relationship, or purchasing a house. but they don’t all have to be big, as a quote from a song that i like by timbuck 3 “it’s the little things that make life such a big deal.”

so if you are ready to look at the new opportunities in your life start with what you do each day. take an opportunity to thank your spouse/partner for putting up with your bad moods, apologize to your child or pet for losing patience with them when you had a bad day that had nothing to do with them, thank your family for supporting you through a challenging time in your life or maybe when they told you the truth instead of telling you what you wanted to hear.

we are presented with new beginnings each day – the good, the bad and the ugly – how we handle them is our opportunity to be a positive or negative force in our life and in the lives of those around us. even if it is a very similar situation you have been presented with before does not mean that this time it is not a new opportunity to react differently and in turn have a different outcome.

one other note is to not try to do too much all at once – that goes for the trend of setting resolutions too. if you take on a list of 10+ things that you want to take on each day you will be overwhelmed and then discouraged. once we get discouraged then the cycle starts: frustration, a sense of failure and maybe even anger toward ourselves for not “sticking” to it. start with one opportunity at a time because if you are really paying attention we are presented with thousands each day.

i wish you a joyful 2008 and one filled with endless possibilities! i also look forward to sharing the new year with you on and off the mat!

many blessings,
siobhan troy-carranza

at 6 months pregnant, my yoga practiced has changed. really, it changed the moment i learned i would be having a baby. for me, it has become less about the asanas (as there become less and less that I can choose from) and more about bringing yogic principles into my daily life. yoga is my lifeline to leading a more calm and sane life—one centered on the truth of what really matters. i find that my experience of pregnancy is really one big yogic metaphor for life.

what i have learned so far:

* listen to your body and truly appreciate all it does. your body has a wisdom all its own. if we can get our mind out of the way, it will do what it does best.
* let go of expectations. each day is different, your energy is different and everything is constantly changing. release all the “shoulds” and….
* live in the present moment. when you think about it, nine months is a short period of time for a major life transition, like bringing a new life into this world. each day, week, and month holds something new for my body and growing baby. savor the moment because it doesn’t last long.

the current theme song for my pregnancy (everyone has a theme song, right?) is “ordinary miracle” by sarah mcLaughlin. the title really speaks to me, because what better way is there to describe an everyday, nature-driven process like pregnancy that truly is a miracle?

one verse beautifully states:

life is like a gift they say, wrapped up for you everyday,
open up and find a way to give some of your own

as we start the new year, i challenge you to try to view each day—good or bad—as a gift, and to cherish its unique lessons. perhaps we can all be a bit more open to giving our part of our lives to others, whether that is family, friends, fellow yogis or total strangers.

i look forward to seeing you on the mat soon.

namaste.

i started practicing yoga last year, and am eternally grateful to whatever part of me picked up that mat and started my journey. facing many changes in my life, i felt disconnected from myself. i needed to bring my body and mind back as one, needed to find that relationship that was lost. i started browsing books, websites, and podcasts to find something that interested me, that clicked, but nothing seemed right. i came across kimberly wilson’s podcast "hip tranquil chick" and was intrigued. then i picked up her book and became inspired. i had been exposed to yoga in the past but was either too nervous to take a class or too scared to try it at home. i finally got up the courage to visit tranquil space bethesda and participate in a series for ‘newbie’s’. what an amazing experience! i loved every minute of it and started taking classes weekly. the teachers motivate and inspire me, the space welcomes me. through yoga i am beginning to understand myself better, and slowly reconnect to those pieces that seemed lost. tranquil space bethesda has started me on that path and i look forward to the rest of the journey.

love and kindness,
christina p.

shannon conrad

shannon is a licensed acupuncturist who practices structural acupressure and traditional five- element acupuncture, a powerful form of healing that addresses the needs of patients on mind, body, and spirit levels. she discovered her love of acupuncture during the four years she lived and worked in china, and continued her study of acupuncture and chinese medicine when back in the states. she holds a master’s degree from the tai sophia institute in acupuncture, and masters in chinese studies from columbia university, and has studied zen meditation in thailand, reiki and yoga in india and chinese medicine and bodywork both in the united states and in china. shannon is in the process of becoming certified in zero balancing, a form of bodywork that incorporates eastern concepts of energy and healing, to help align energy and physical structure in the body.

the practice of acupuncture originated in china over 3000 years ago and is the oldest continually practices health care system in the world. acupuncture works by redistributing the qi among the meridians they pass through. illness results when there is a block in a meridian and it cannot flow freely. i have been trained to recognize hundreds of precise points at which blockage can occur, and by influencing the energy at those points I can encourage the body to restore health and equilibrium.

the acupuncture needles used are extremely fine, and are about the thickness of two strands of human hair. shannon only uses single-use, disposable stainless steel needles. upon insertion, some patients report they feel nothing at all, while others report feeling a mild tingling sensations, warmth or a momentary dull ache. most patients report a sense of deep relaxation after the needles are inserted and often fall asleep during treatment. sensations vary from point to point and from person to person.

acupuncture is often effective with a wide range of complaints, including chronic fatigue, depression, back pain, joint pain, infertility, asthma, addictions, and stress. acupuncture is also helpful for many chronic illnesses and health concerns that have no clear origin or cause. the world health organization recognizes the ability of acupuncture and traditional oriental medicine to treat over 43 common disorders including:

  • gastrointestinal disorders, such as food allergies, peptic ulcer, chronic diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, gastrointestinal weakness, anorexia and gastritis

  • uro-genital disorders, including stress incontinence, urinary tract infections, and sexual dysfunction gynecological disorders, such as irregular, heavy, or painful menstruation, infertility in women and men, and premenstrual syndrome (pms), morning sickness and breech birth.

  • respiratory disorders, such as emphysema, sinusitis, asthma, allergies and bronchitis

  • disorders of the bones, muscles, joints and nervous system, such as arthritis, migraine

  • headaches, neuralgia, insomnia, dizziness and low back, neck and shoulder pain

  • circulatory disorders, such as hypertension, angina pectoris, arteriosclerosis and anemia

  • emotional and psychological disorders, including depression, and anxiety addictions, such as alcohol, nicotine and drugs
