“just do your best no matter what it takes today, and keep your hope for a better tomorrow.”
~ susan roundtree, breast cancer survivor

last week i spoke at a support group for breast cancer survivors about yoga. they were a wonderful group of women and i felt a bit in awe of them, as i do whenever i meet someone who has fought this disease. some had been clear anywhere from a year to 10 years, while others were undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. i thoroughly enjoyed sharing with them the benefits of yoga and then taking them through some asanas (poses) that they could practice while sitting and then some standing poses. all of them commented on how much better they felt after just a short practice, maybe 5 to 10 minutes.

i know that i always feel great after stepping onto my mat, but after five years it is good to be reminded how it feels for someone who has never done yoga. it was also humbling for me to sit and listen to them and their stories, to hear how and when they found out they had cancer. it was then quite special for me to share with them the practice of yoga, which can also be humbling in a much different way.

all of us, when we started practicing, were probably surprised how much better we felt at the end of a class and then started telling everyone we knew how great yoga is for both mind and body. i am often asked if we offer or if we will offer a class for ____________ (fill in the blank), and although sometimes it is something i have not thought of, most of the time it is something that i would like to offer. as a teacher, i would love to have classes for many types of people, like cancer survivors, seniors, teens, kids, etc., but as we know, yoga teaches us that we have to find the balance between taking on too much — or, at least, not spreading yourself too thin.

in the past year and a half that tranquil space bethesda has been open, we have grown quite a bit, and i so appreciate all of the support and enthusiasm that i hear from you. with that growth comes changes, and hopefully you will see them as positively as i do. one of those positive changes is the fabulous four new teachers that are joining the tranquil space bethesda teaching team: andrea, geri, gina and niya. most of them i met when they took the first level 1 teacher training, and i am very pleased with their growth as teachers and yogis. when you see them, say hi and look for their names either teaching a regular class or covering another.

have a wonderful 4th of july, and come by for a practice during the day with september before you go view the fireworks!

blessings and love,
siobhan troy

two years ago and new to teaching yoga, i experienced many of those things that a beginner does — i put great effort and thought into each class, agonized over options and sequences. i was challenged by my teaching and had not yet found the path that flowed from within. on reflection, i view that experience as an essential part to creating the foundation that i have built.

today, i find myself in a very different place. i have expanded my network and community; i have expanded my passion, knowledge, and skills through a variety of new experiences under a variety of teachers that has allowed me to begin to see things in a new light.

my worldview about yoga and myself took a major shift last summer when i went to kripalu to study under shiva rea. this was a new experience — a full seven days immersed in study and practice with one of the most influential vinyasa yoga instructors, and one who really inspires my practice. i remember returning from the training, and my partner of seven years noticed that in very subtle but real ways, i moved differently. i took from that training new ways of being and teaching, and i immediately incorporated those learnings into my teaching and my practice on and off the mat.

i followed that up with a teacher training in yoga trance dance and will soon be traveling to los angeles for another two-week yoga immersion with shiva rea. i have discovered, through mentors and teachers, that those answers we seek are already within us, and that yoga can be one of the many doorways to our true self.

today, i am constantly experimenting and challenging myself, and my students, not only under the influence of my early teachers, but also of those who have shifted my approach, my feelings, my thoughts, and my passion for yoga. today, i no longer struggle with my classes. by embracing the universal energy that is all around us, my classes and my practice naturally flow.

i have been practicing yoga at tranquil space bethesda for just six short months. before that, i that took a class here and there, but none felt quite right and my search for a yoga class continued. last winter, i was thrilled to learn that a "new" yoga studio would open in bethesda and eagerly awaited its grand opening. since my first class in january, i have been hooked!

the primary reason i sought out yoga was the physical benefits — i hoped to achieve greater strength and improved flexibility. practicing at tranquil space, i have come to appreciate that there is so much more to yoga. stepping on the mat is a welcome escape from the all-too-hectic pace of life. i know that once i step on the mat, i can just be, but for me, this is easier said than done. staying present in the moment, to keep my mind from racing and thinking about what else i can/should be doing has been a great challenge. i am working on this not only during class, but also beyond the mat, learning to appreciate where i am in other aspects of my life.

i am so glad to be a part of tranquil space and i am looking forward to continuing my yoga practice for a long, long time. thank you, siobhan and everyone at tranquil space, for becoming "my" yoga studio, sharing the lessons of yoga, and yes, helping to improve my strength and flexibility.
