july is
here! that means we are half way through
2007, isn’t that amazing? it is officially
summer and i am looking forward to visiting
my sister later this month. it will be my
daughter’s first flight and though she is
completely oblivious to it, i am a bit
nervous. having never flown with a child,
let alone a baby, and then having the added
security stuff to deal with, i am hoping
that it won’t be very traumatic for either
of us. i don’t plan to be the sippy cup lady
and i know that people fly with
babies/children all the time but it does not
seem to ease my anxiety at the moment.
my sister has flown with my nephew and niece
many times even when they were babies. she
got the dirty looks from other passengers as
she boarded and the kids were not even
crying or fussing. she has sat next to
people who were rude to her because she had
the gall to have the seat next to them with
two kids to boot. parents don’t find joy in
having a screaming child at home let alone
in public.
why is that we are so intolerable of not
just parents traveling with kids but even
the person who is covered in tattoos or
looks different from you?
now that may seem like a strange correlation
but as a yoga teacher i have seen the look
on other student’s faces when someone walked
into the studio with pink hair, strange
choice in clothing and/or lots of tattoos.
there is one student in particular that i am
reminded of, she was such a sweet woman,
very warm personality and she happened to
have tattoos on both arms and her back. a
few times when she attended my classes i saw
one or two students make faces like they
were completely offended though she did not
do or say anything to them. all she did was
enter the studio and laid down her mat.
i use to do door to door fundraising for an
environmental group and one night in fort
worth, tx, i knocked on a door and the
person who opened the door had no nose. i
don’t know what happed to him in the past
but he had a hole in his face where his nose
should have been. initially i was stunned,
not quite what i was expecting, but managed
to recover fairly quickly and started to
tell him why i was there. we ended up having
a great conversation about the environment
and he was a very sweet man. i wondered then
and now how many people are shocked or
horrified by his appearance that they don’t
even give him the time of day?
tolerance is something our world needs a lot
more of and like most things it starts with
the individual. begin by noticing when a
judgmental thought pops into your head,
recognize it and then let it go. don’t
overanalyze it or berate yourself for it,
just drop it. take some comfort in also
knowing that just because someone looks “out
of the norm” does not mean that they don’t
have a beautiful personality underneath. and
the next time you travel have some pity on
that parent whose child is making life very
rough, we were all kids at one time and i am
sure all of our parent’s could share many
stories of how we made life miserable for
them in public. (sorry mom)

the
feeling of excitement and anticipation i see
on my own face on this picture, i still feel
every time i step onto the yoga mat. i feel
as if i am rolling up my yoga sleeves and am
ready to stretch, bend, fold, strengthen,
open and breathe deeply nourishing breaths.
having finally found a way of moving and
working with my body that i thoroughly
enjoyed and cherished every moment was what
initially brought me to the practice.
spending, like most of us, long hours at a
desk in front of a computer, i was
absolutely thrilled to finally have found a
way to open hunched shoulders, release
tension in the upper back and move hips into
all the directions they are designed to move
in.
then i started to delve deeper into the
underlying foundations of the practice and
learned that asana was just one of eight
limbs of yoga. at the same time i also
happened to come across various articles in
magazines and on websites that made a point
of saying that the asana practice was
completely overrated and that we should turn
our attention more to the other seven limbs
of yoga.
suddenly, i felt a slight twinge of guilt
every time i stepped onto the mat. was i
allowed to enjoy the physical aspect of yoga
so much? should i cut down on the time i
spent on the mat and devote myself more to
the other practices of yoga? i considered
this briefly and then, nevertheless,
returned to my mat. i couldn’t explain why,
but the physical practice had become such an
established part of my life that i inwardly
rebelled at the thought of giving it up and
to sit in meditation, practice ahimsa,
saucha and santosha. not that i wasn’t doing
all of these things. don’t get me wrong. my
apartment and i are pretty tidy and clean, i
avoid paper towels wherever i can and
meditate regularly - often after my asana
practice…. i just didn’t want to shift the
balance and do more of that and less asana.
and yet, i couldn’t quite shake off this
nagging sense of guilt for enjoying asana so
much. so i ventured on to practice,
questions, doubts and thoughts in my head,
nevertheless.
at the beginning of last year, i began the
formal study of ayurveda, an ancient indian
healing system, often thought of as the
sister science of yoga. one of our first
assignments was to learn about sankhya, the
creation philosophy that is the foundation
for both the practice of yoga and ayurveda.
sankhya teaches us about two of 24 main
principles behind the universe: purusha,
which is consciousness, atman, the higher
self, spirit; and prakruti, the “ultimate
substance behind whatever can be perceived
in the universe of matter and mind” (david
frawley). in a nutshell, purusha is the
spirit and prakruti form and matter and both
of which are essential for creation, thus
both come together to form a human being. it
is our body that is the vehicle for us to
experience spirit and it is the path through
which we (re-)connect with spirit. all of a
sudden, i felt as if not only a big
lightbulb, but an entire chandelier went off
in my head. it was not only fine to take
good care of my body, it was essential in
order to connect with purusha from which
“the ultimate healing power and the original
prana come from”.
i silently let out a big sigh of relief -
and returned to my mat, relieved that my
intuition hadn’t let me down, that spending
some time on the mat each day in an asana
practice that allows me to return to a state
of balance is as spiritual as meditating and
levitating (whenever i get there).
namaste!

each
month we choose a pose to focus on
in each class through strong attention

upon moving back to bethesda from
san francisco last august, i knew i
had to find a way to keep part of my
california lifestyle while living
back on the east coast. shortly
after my arrival in the area, and
before i even had a job, i signed on
to be a studio assistant (sa) at
tranquil space bethesda. i took my
first class one fateful september
night with siobhan, and have been a
faithful student and sa since.
yoga has helped me to feel healthy
and strong—both physically and
mentally. i look forward to each
class and always leave feeling like
i have just had a full body massage.
i love walking into the studio and
leaving the stress and chaos of my
day at the door. i try to integrate
yoga into my daily life, and laugh
when i catch myself with my
shoulders up at my ears at work. now
with yoga, i just remind myself to
stop, take a deep three-part yogic
breath and push my shoulders back
down where they belong. yoga helps
me to keep perspective. thank you to
all of the wonderful tsb teachers,
sa’s, and students for supporting me
along my yogic journey!
see you on the mat--namaste!

more and more thai yoga massage is becoming
more popular here in the west. so of course
what most people want to know is what
exactly is thai yoga massage? it differs
quite a bit from traditional massage because
you generally get to wear what you do to
yoga class and it all takes place on a mat
on the floor. it is a combination of
massaging the energy pathways in the body,
acupressure and assisted yoga poses. the
best way i know to describe it is you get
that wonderful blissed out feeling - like
after an invigorating and nurturing yoga
class but you're not doing any of the work-
i am! thai yoga massage also has a very
meditative quality to it for both the
practitioner and the client, i think that is
apparent in the relaxed, contented state
most people find themselves in after the
treatment.
thai yoga massage is suitable for all body
types, it can be modified much like poses in
your yoga classes. it is a great way to
clear toxins from the body, relax the mind,
and care for yourself. if your interested in
scheduling a massage or if you have any
questions please fee free to contact me at
ginat@tranquilspace.com.
