siobhan and isabellawell, it is now official, summer is here! i find it somewhat amusing that we have a set date as to when a season changes. to me it has been “unofficially” summer for a couple of weeks. i wonder who decided that there had to be a specific date to tell us the season has changed? i think stepping outside, looking at the flowers, trees, or for some when the sneezing starts is a better indication that the season’s have changed.

since it is summer i am sure many of us have plans to take off from work go lie by a pool or on a beach or in a park. it is the quiet moments that are refueling, as long as you can let the mind quiet down. i must admit recently that has been extremely hard for me. my mind seems to be racing more than usual and i am not sure if i am watching too much of the news and hearing about the weather extremes to the west of us and/or the news about everything getting more expensive like gas, food, utilities etc. it can send you into a hyperventilation mode, but then i have to remind myself to breathe. then i can feel to my bones that i need to step onto my mat, move my body and listen to what it needs. stress manifests itself in our bodies on a very physical level, our shoulders may feel even tighter than usual. you may also notice that your back is a bit more stiff but that could be because you are sitting more in a chair hunched over numbers instead of getting up and moving.

a favorite book for me to quote from is darren main’s, “spiritual journeys along the yellow brick road” because of many reasons but one recently has been that our bodies know what they need. the problem lies in when our minds don’t take the time to listen. so, find some quiet time and then really listen to body’s wisdom, as i say in class, our bodies are smarter and more capable than our minds think. i hope to see you on the mat for some time to nurture your body this summer.

namaste,
siobhan

ahhh kali, the doomsday goddess of time and change, the creator and destroyer of worlds - there's no one out there quite like her. just in case you didn't know she's the super- freaky looking hindu goddess you see standing on top of her hubby shiva. by the way, did i mention that she likes to wear human appendages - charming isn't she? and, when she visits you (and she will visit you as time and change do come to us all) hold onto your britches because things are about to get a little....ok a lot kooky.

kali embodies all the dark crazy detours that life likes to throw at us. She is unpredictable and will show up at any time and especially when you feel that you have planned, prepared, numbered and ordered your world to perfection. Kali just loves to shake up our hectic over-scheduled over-planned day to day lives. Having a wedding on the beach? Kali swoops in with a tropical thunderstorm. Scored the lead in some fabulous well-received play? Call the understudy you've just developed a serious case of mono. Planning on moving across country to live with dear Aunt Bertha in sunny California? Think again you're not going to make it and neither will Aunt Bertha.

when kali makes an earth shattering appearance in my own life i am always incredibly rattled and somehow always incredibly surprised. why? i know that life is characterized by impermanence. nothing stays the same. change and sometimes, in the case of kali, cataclysmic change is inevitable. and yet i can still get into a tailspin when something out of my "supposed ordinary" happens. and it makes me fearful at times too. fearful to get involved or to expect too much. it's much easier to retreat into my cocoon then reach out to another or take a much needed stand.

so what's the remedy? i don't really have one. i know my yoga and meditation practices are incredibly potent but above all I think it is the recognition that i am not special in my experience. i see clearly that we all suffer, experience loss and die and somehow i find that comforting. no one is exempt or immune and that allows me to experience a sense of compassion for myself and others. and from this fertile ground i am sometimes able to create spaciousness around my experience. and, it is this which pulls me from the depths...this and perhaps a little human sacrifice to kali - just kidding:)

asana of the month

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

dhanurasanaurdhva dhanurasana (wheel)

benefits

  • opens the chest and stretches the abdominal wall
  • strengthens the arms, thighs and spine; and it opens the breathing body, creating a new awareness and rhythm.
  • backbends tend to open the heart center, increase energy, and stimulate the thyroid.

yogi of the month

this title is reserved for yogis who have shown a strong dedication to their practice, are enthusiastic about their growth, and enjoy sharing it with others.

frauke harnischfegerfrauke harnischfeger

my yoga experience stretches over a couple of years and two different countries: the united states and germany. i started out in bethesda - at a different studio than tranquil space - where i learned a lot about body alignment. when we moved back to germany it took me a while to find a new place: working with the teacher there taught me a lot about the benefits of breathing. now i am back in bethesda, and have enjoyed very much coming to tranquil space bethesda. i like the flexibility of the classes and the ability of the teachers to work with each student individually, even though the students are coming in with different levels of experience. that is how i mastered the headstand - a pose i did not think would be in my reach.
