change is
always happening, sometimes for the good and
sometimes we are not sure if it is good or
not. in the past year there have been many
changes in my life and now a couple of my
good friends are having some of those same
changes. one of my dear friends just had a
baby girl on may 29. i am so excited to have
a close friend join me in motherhood. then
another of my good friends just moved and
bought a house, unfortunately for me it is
in charlottesville, but i am very happy for
her and her husband. and yet still there is
another dear friend who is getting married
this fall.
i tend to be a person who feels strongly
about those close to me. i was told many
times when i was a child that i was too
emotional. i never really understood what
that meant and why it was a bad thing. i
don’t wonder anymore, it is a part of who i
am and i think that it is a good thing. i
would say that i am passionate person. i am
passionate about my family, friends, my
work, and my beliefs. i try to do my best by
those i come into contact with while keeping
my own personal boundaries.
now many of you know or would have guessed
that one of my passions is yoga and the
teaching of yoga. i am truly blessed that
people enjoy my classes and enjoy tranquil
space bethesda. we continue to grow and
change as we have done over the past 2 ˝
years. so, look for those changes in our
june schedule, you will see a yoga 3,
gentle/seniors yoga, an additional yoga 1 on
sundays and a slight change to our friday
schedule. don’t be afraid to try something
new – that does not mean you have to come to
a yoga 3 class but step outside your comfort
zone by taking a class with one of our
fabulous new teachers.
we never know where our path will lead us
but what is most important is to enjoy the
journey and be truthful to ourselves.
blessings,
siobhan

yoga
practice has often led me to try new things.
i came to tranquil space bethesda about two
years ago. i had just started a new job
close by and was eager to practice yoga more
regularly. i had tried out many studios in
DC, but between a busy job and general
inertia of life had not practiced as often
as i wanted. early on in my bethesda
practice i started as a work study student
first handing out fliers at the metro and
later signing students in at the front desk.
this brought me even closer to the tranquil
space community and gave me the ability to
practice more – and try new things.
i remember going to my first yoga 2 class. i
felt like everything was happening at double
speed. learning headstand was a gradual
process with siobhan pushing me along and
giving me encouragement each step i took.
there seems always to be something else to
try out and experiment with. i took the
level 1 teacher training with siobhan last
spring and just finished the level 2
training. this summer as siobhan adds a yoga
3 class to the schedule and I take on
teaching as a sub for the studio i find
there are still lots of new challenges and
opportunities. for me while yoga is often
asking us try something new and challenging,
in practice it often means just being in the
present and seeing what our bodies – and
minds – are up for today.

each
month we choose a pose to focus on
in each class through strong attention
to alignment, variations, and/or modifications
as a way to grow and expand our yogic
horizons.

i started coming to tranquil space
about a year ago, and immediately
fell in love with the teachers, the
atmosphere, and my fellow students.
i've been a mover all my
life--modern dance, mostly--but yoga
has been different from everything
else i've ever tried. i so
appreciate that when i come to
class, it is about me and my mat and
where i am at that moment. it
doesn't matter how i'm doing
compared to anyone else, or even
compared to yesterday. if i am
tired, exhaustion is part of my
practice. if i am riled up, my
practice reflects it. if i am
searching for calm, i can find it
through my practice. i am so often
awed by moments in the studio--what
the teachers and their students can
do, and what i discover during my
practice.
for me, the biggest challenge in
practicing yoga is knowing and
living these things with all my
being, not just part of my mind. i
catch myself making sure my clothes
are just so, or checking out the
person next to me as we move into a
pose, or hoping someone sees how
utterly fabulous i am at the moment,
or wondering why i should keep
trying something that is challenging
my balance, strength, breath, and
concentration. at that moment, i can
choose to let go of what distracts
me and come back to my practice, to
myself, to my body, to my awareness.
and so for me, the beauty of my
practice lies in those moments--this
search for my physical, emotional,
and mental edges and the struggle to
trace the ever-evolving path along
them.
see you on the mat--namaste!

raindrop
therapy is very mythical sounding, isn’t it?
well, it is based on a lakota indian
tradition and its benefits are quite
amazing. not to mention that it feels
wonderful. raindrop therapy is the dropping
of pure therapeutic grade oils along the
spine where it is said that we hold bacteria
and viruses. the oils that are typical used
are oregano, thyme, basil, wintergreen,
cypress, marjoram, and peppermint. they are
layered on and dropped about six inches
above the spine. our own electrical field
“charges” the oils in a way as it drops to
the skin. it is very relaxing but it tends
to surprise the person getting the treatment
on how hot the oils can get. the oils are
said to pull bacteria and viruses out of the
spine and that is why a feeling of heat is
typically experienced. i got my first
raindrop several years ago and i was very
surprised to feel a real fire on the back of
my neck then i left feeling very relaxed and
ready for a nice long nap!
a raindrop
treatment is great to boost the immune
system as well it is very beneficial if
you notice a cold coming on. it usually
takes about one hour and if you would like
to experience the benefits of a raindrop
treatment you can email me at
siobhan@tranquilspacebethesda.com.
