siobhan and isabelladid you get out and enjoy the lovely weather we had recently? my outside time is usually spent slowly walking up the sidewalk while my daughter, who is almost 19 months, picks up acorn tops and sticks. or we are at a park swinging, climbing, sliding, or picking dandelions, then there are those times she stares with fascination at some older kids playing basketball. life is much more simple yet so exciting when you are under the age of 5!

as adults we don’t remember a time, usually, that we did not know how to jump in the air – my daughter has recently been able to jump with one foot leaving the ground but has not mastered both – or how to bounce a basketball or even know what the heck a basketball is. she says hi to everyone and then stares after someone if they don’t say hi back, sometimes that is because they did not hear her as usually she does bring a smile to the person’s face when they realize she said hi to them. how can you not smile when a small child says hello in all their innocence?

she also loves to experiment with her food, how does it feel to smash her vegetables between her fingers? or what is mommy’s reaction when i turn my bowl upside down to watch the food spill everywhere? not one of my favorite things she does but i have to remember she is trying to figure out this world she lives in. the funny thing is we spend most of our life trying to figure out the world we live in. why do good and bad things happen? what will be someone’s reaction when i tell them what i really think? how will my body and mind react if i do try to take the first steps into an arm balancing pose?

summer is here and it is naturally the time of year we want to get out and do things. our bodies are usually very ready for getting up and going. so next time you are on the mat or going for a run, bike ride, climbing, hiking, at the beach or whatever activity you are doing really take some time to notice something new about it. you know from your yoga practice that each day the body and the mind are different. Some days that run or yoga practice will feel wonderful and other days you feel like your limbs are the heaviest objects on earth. instead of focusing on the effort try to remember what it felt like the first time you stepped on the mat or the first race you ran. maybe your first time is not a “fond” memory so try to remember some of the fun of discovering the abilities you do have. our minds and egos are very good on focusing and recalling the struggles, like mine remembering the off season on my high school varsity swim team running around the track. i hated the off season runs! the first thing to pop in my head is that i am not a fast runner rather than my mind recalling the fact that i played soccer for five years on competitive team in houston where i spent 90 minutes running up and down the field as the right halfback loving every minute.

so on those days you struggle take a moment to remember some little thing you love about the activity. i do not enjoy cleaning the house but i do love the end result and believe me i have to keep that in mind to get me through the task. i hope you get out and find some joy in every activity you engage in.

namaste,
siobhan

these days i've been traveling around the dc metropolitan area quite a bit. i teach classes at our arlington studio, our dupont studio, and of course, in bethesda. i work in bethesda as well, and recently, i've been in northeast dc completing my practicum work for a certification in college counseling. hopping around from place to place and meeting new people every day forces one to see that we are more alike than different. it's sometimes hard for me to look at this world and see how divided we seem to be. maya is a concept in yoga which teaches that the world is basically illusion. i've always had trouble with this idea until recently. initially my reluctance to accept this idea stems from my unwillingness to believe one truth--that i have found "the" answer.

i remember leaving a church service one day when i was a little girl. i don't remember what it was about the sermon, but something the pastor said unnerved me. i remember walking out into the hallway thinking, "i will belong to this church for now, but once i explore other denominations and find the 'right one' i will make a switch." as my explorations continued, the world revealed to me a multiplicity of religions and systems of thought; each of which had insightful ideas to offer--how could i choose? but these days i've realized that we don't have to choose. we can take bits and pieces from everywhere and incorporate that into who we are; we can have many truths. to get past the 'veil of maya' we are to try our best to see that all people are sparks of the divine, albeit at different stages of self-actualization. the best way i can explain this goes something like this: we all need and use electricity in our daily lives.

we don't, however, just walk right in to a power plant and grab all the electricity we need. It would be too powerful. electricity must be channeled. people are like this. gurus and the great spiritual people walking the earth are very close to the power source and that is why they radiate powerful energies. most people, like you and i, are somewhere along the channel. some people are so far down the line that it is very difficult to see their spark. our job is to try to see that spark in everyone...on every road that we travel journey.

i first came to tranquil space bethesda over a year ago, having recently moved to bethesda, and am grateful to have found such a warm and inviting place to learn and practice yoga. i was in a period of transition, as i had just gotten married and soon afterward was promoted to a new position at work as a senior editor in the books department of a large nonprofit association; i was seeking and in need of a “tranquil space.” i tried a yoga class almost 10 years ago at another studio in dc and then practiced at home on and off with videos; although i enjoyed yoga, i never felt committed to my practice until i started classes at tranquil space bethesda. the nurturing environment and talented teachers drew me in, and i could feel the benefits of my yoga practice not only physically but also spiritually and emotionally in my work and relationships. recently, i have begun to volunteer at a therapeutic riding center, something i have wanted to do for many years but have never actively pursued. i think yoga has helped me reconnect with myself in many ways and i will always practice, thanks to the encouragement and skill of the teachers and staff at tranquil space bethesda.
