siobhan and isabellalife is all about the details isn’t it?? but then again the details can get very cumbersome, stressful, and exhausting. much of our positive experiences come from the small details that we see- a smile and warm greeting when you enter a place of business or your home. my daughter squeals with delight when she sees her nana walk in the door and i just love that joyful sound.

earlier this month i experienced back pain, something i have never had before. my husband, unfortunately, has consistent back pain. i am not sure if it was the universes way of making sure i stayed empathetic with him on those days when he is in pain, when i am tired, trying to keep an eye on an active toddler, get work done and make dinner. when i was laid out on the couch unable to stand up straight for two days my husband worked very hard to make sure i had to do as little as possible. it was odd having the roles reversed as i am not very good at being “helpless” but i did appreciate all the little things my husband did for me.

it was also a bit heart breaking to see the look on my daughter’s face while i was laid up, she did not know why mommy was not dancing with her or not as willing to pick her up! then my animals kept giving me strange looks as i walked very slowly across the room – those looks made me want to laugh. the small detail of being able to walk without pain is one i have more of an appreciation for.

when i was able to get back to teaching i had a student tell me that i am not suppose to have back pain since i teach yoga! it is funny what expectations people have about you based on your occupation. i do have a fellow yoga teacher and dear friend who has also had episodes of back pain and she has since figured out why. it has to do with an alignment in her body, one area is too open/too flexible so it throws another part of her back out of whack.

so, it is all about the details even within our body. when one area is weak, tight, or too loose then other parts of our body have to compensate. those little details within us can cause big problems. what are we to do? pay attention to the details within our selves. if your body is feeling out of whack then take some time to figure out why. that may mean going to see a doctor, or seeing a massage therapist or seeing an acupuncturist (they can tell you things that a doctor can’t).

if you feel out of sorts but not physically necessarily you may need to do an assessment of your diet, sleep patterns, etc. now once again massage or acupuncture can help with this but so can talking to someone who is an ayurvedic practitioner. they help you figure out what foods are good for you to eat which then impact your energy, sleep, moods.

(then to make a shameless plug we have some fabulous women who offer these services at the studio: massage – cheryl@tranquilspacebethesda.com & stacy@tranquilspacebethesda.com, acupuncture – shannon acupuncture@tranquilspacebethesda.com, and ayurveda – anne@tranquilspace.com)

there are also the small details of taking care of our health, with the crazy cold & flu season still upon us it is important to look into the details - are you doing things to boost your immune system or draining it? are you taking time to rest?

paying attention to the details can be beneficial if we do it in a way to be sure we are taking care of ourselves and those around us.

namaste,
siobhan

for "i hate quotes. tell me what you know." - ralph waldo emerson

using other people's words to convey my own thoughts has never been my modus operandi; however, emerson's adage is more than simple words - it's about praxis - and most certainly applicable to my philosophy in the yoga studio. i want to help students learn to teach themselves.

as a teacher i hope to invite the student to participate in their practice actively, not simply by complying with my instructions, but by paying attention to what is going on internally - developing body awareness and engaging the body in a conscious dialogue. ask yourself questions on the mat; how can i take this pose deeper? do i need to relax more in this backbend? is my breathing deep and even? what is the goal of this pose?

one day in class i asked the students to come into uttanasana (standing forward fold) and i took notice of a student in the back of the class. she was basically ninety degrees; her legs were completely stick-straight and her back very rounded. when i told her to soften in the knees and kiss her chest to the tops of her legs - so as not to injure her lower back - she looked at me confounded and said, "you're not supposed to bend your knees in yoga."

i have to admit that i was a bit shocked and didn't exactly know how to respond. she had this fixed belief about what yoga was supposed to be and this prevented her from really tuning in to what the body needed. it is harmful to assume that "doing" a pose means going to a place where your body is not ready to be, and while this may be an extreme example, most all of us have at one time or another tuned out in yoga class.

this experience highlights the idea of self-study, or svadyaya. this concept, applied on the yoga mat, opens up the experience of our practice a hundred fold. instead of stretching the muscle, we learn to fire it. we learn to lengthen the body and concurrently draw energy in. simply, we transcend asanas (poses) and experience yoga in a more profound way.

so the next time you approach your yoga mat, know that there is more than one teacher in the room. tune in to your inner presence and be guided by "what you know."

asana of the month

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

shizuka sugiharashizuka sugihara

i started practicing yoga in japan a couple of years ago, because i wanted to reduce the stiffness in my shoulders and my back pain, that were caused by my computer work and child care. but soon after that, i found out yoga was good for not only the body but also the mind, and there were lots of things to study.

i came to the us 2 years ago with my family. when i found tranquil space for the first time, i felt some chemistry. because my name "shizuka" means "tranquil" in japanese.

the first class i took was unforgettable. i liked the teacher and friendly environment, tea, cookies, lovely boutique... it was so fancy and filled with good spirit. my body is not physically strong but i can see my progress little by little, today is better than last week...that makes me happy. i like this studio, because the teachers are so friendly and very professional and encourage me to go far.

i want to keep practicing yoga as long as i can!
