“the birds know that hope is born again, long before the promise of flowers.” ~ danna faulds
may has always held a special meaning for me, mainly because my birthday falls in it, as does my mom's. with hers just two days after mine i always thought that i was particularly special. we also know that mothers' day is in may and in the troy household it also meant my parents' anniversary. this year they will be celebrating 42 years you go, mom and dad! so, may was a busy month when i was growing up in that there was lots to celebrate.
as i come into may 2006, i know that i still have a lot to celebrate. not only my birthday, my fabulous mom's, mothers' day, my parents' 42nd anniversary, and the wonderful yogis that share their time with me, but also the start of my marriage with my wonderful new husband, marco. he has been my best friend and biggest supporter for six years now and i feel very lucky to have him in my life.
have you taken some time recently to show your gratitude to those closest to you? mothers' day is this month and those of us blessed with our moms still with us have the time to show our love and thanks to her. no one is perfect but when we have a bad day we tend to lash out at those close to us. when you are having a good day, do you share that "good feeling" with those close to you too?
share your joy even if you have no idea why you feel that joy, because i am sure we can think of one too many times when we have "shared" our anger or annoyance with our spouse/partner, mom, dad, children, and friends. so instead of feeling bad, let it go. try to be more aware of how you are interacting with those around you, don't judge or bottle those dark feelings, but notice them, accept that they are a part of you too, then move on. most importantly, allow the good ones flow out too.
blessings and love,
siobhan troy

every time i step onto my yoga mat, i consider it a sacred space. it's a place where i can feel centered, peaceful and whole. it's a place to surrender to my own beauty and magic, where i can feel graceful and open to grace . . . a moving meditation . . . my practice becomes a prayer where i can wrap my breath around the pose and infuse my body with spirit and joy. yoga is a celebration of the way the body moves..a celebration of the breath . . . this is what i hope i to bring to my students and my classes when i ask them to open their hearts, find the joy within the pose and as they practice, to turn the corners of the mouth . . . up!
~ namaste

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

it was almost eight years ago when i first went with a co-worker to check out a yoga class in baltimore. savasana consisted of the instructor telling us to imagine ourselves to be "loose jell-o" that would "melt into the floor." yoga has been a constant in my life ever since.
i've lived in four different places and held three different jobs since then, which albeit stressful, has enabled me to experience different yoga styles, practice with unique and inspiring instructors and learn many valuable lessons along the way. i can't even imagine my life without yoga now. friends find it interesting that i take such joy in standing on my head, my parents' dog loves that down-dog puts me in just the perfect place for doggie-kisses, and a favorite pastime is watching little kids just naturally put themselves into yoga poses. in my professional life as a psychiatric nurse i find i frequently need yoga's grounding and emotionally calming effects in order to be the best i can for my patients. often a co-worker will comment after an intense shift, "crista, need yoga class tonight?"
sure, i frequently still get twisted up and feel like i can't tell my left from my right on some days (as siobhan knows), but learning to be ok with where you are at any given moment is one of yoga's lessons that carries far beyond the mat. it's also very helpful for me to remind myself of this when doing hip openers of any type. thanks to tranquil space bethesda for its part in my ongoing yoga journey! namaste
