when we hear or face such tragedies like the terrible act down at virginia tech it is hard to know how to help or even what to say. then with all the news coverage you may feel like i do and want to get away from it. it is a very sad event in our recent history and i do offer my thoughts for those who were directly touched by it. i chose not to mention it when i taught classes simply because i was at a loss for words and i felt that all of us can use the time at the studio as a refuge from hearing such awful news.

my wish is that everyone would find their way to the yoga mat since it has such wonderful healing qualities. the physical benefits are the first benefit we usually find then what i don’t think we discuss as openly is its emotional and spiritual benefits. it is also a practice that encourages us to face our own dark side so that we can acknowledge that we all have one and then move on. by recognizing it and not feeling ashamed we can heal and then let our light can shine brighter.

we all have a light side though it may get weighed down by the stress of our modern lives. now when i refer to our dark side i do not mean to infer that any of us are capable of such violent acts like the tragedy at virginia tech but we are all capable of hurting those closest to us. words can and do leave scars much deeper than any physical ones. when i was in college i volunteered at a battered women’s shelter in austin, tx and i learned that what keeps many of us in unhealthy situations is not necessarily the fear of physical violence but the continual “beating” of words thrown at us.

i mentioned lessening our negative impact on our world last month. i encourage you to focus on lessening our negative emotional impact on those around us. that can be working to not snap at family member when you have had a stressful day, it can be refraining from snapping at your fellow drivers (my tactic is to refer to other drivers as “sunshine,” it helps take the wind out of my sail) or even losing patience with a co-worker.

now we may never understand why such violent tragedies occur but remember that little deeds/words/actions have a bigger impact than we realize. i hope this month brings much healing to us all.

blessings,
siobhan troy-carranza

time does fly when you are having fun! it seems to fly even when you are feeling challenge or stressed doesn’t it? may marks five years of teaching yoga for me. it seems like a very short time and then again it feels like i have been teaching forever. i have had many life changes in the past five years and yoga has helped me find my right path in that time as well as assist me in keeping me grounded. when i started teaching i was a fundraiser at a hospital and yoga helped me see that i was not living my life listening to my inner voice. i was extremely stressed out and not really enjoying myself. i was also suffering from migraines several times a week, boy was my body trying to tell me something!

with the emotional support of my boyfriend (now husband), friends and fellow teacher/friend lisa (who incidentally made the same leap at about the same time) i leapt into teaching yoga full time. i was terrified because i had no idea if i was going to be able to make a living or if i was going to even be happy. then my wonderful therapist at the time reminded me that i can always change my mind and go back to working in another field. what i was afraid of was failure. i had so many “what ifs” going through my head yet my heart and my inner voice knew it was the right choice. my mom thought i was crazy but she knows now that i am much happier and i would venture to say that she is proud of me. teaching yoga is not for everyone, teaching any subject/movement is not for everyone and i don’t advocate that uprooting your life will make you happier. i do encourage you to listed to that inner voice. it may be hard to hear if you have not let it have its voice for a long time but with practice you can hear it more clearly.

the message may be terrifying but it does not mean that we can never turn back, as a matter of fact we probably will be a bit wiser from the experience. i think most of us need to remember that our inner voice’s goal is not to make us fail. it wants us to be the most wonderful human being we can be. so the next time you sit down for your yoga practice, really take the time to quiet the mind and see what your inner voice is trying to tell you.

as always, i wish you much joy and peace!

december 3rd, 1998. i will never forget when i went to my first yoga class. i couldn’t touch my toes or do anything resembling a push-up, and i didn’t plan on returning. i feel so fortunate that a close friend ‘dragged’ me back. i first considered yoga to be a challenge to overcome, but i quickly was enlightened, realizing it was so much more. yoga revealed to me an inner strength that i didn’t know existed – it was such a powerful feeling that it prompted a crying spell in the middle of class. i began at tranquil space when it was located at the church on 16th street. i walked in and immediately felt at home, and i am thrilled that this feeling is sustained in its various current locations. i turn, especially at trying times, to the many gems that i learn from the phenomenal tranquil space teachers. a recent example was when i found myself waiting hours in a cold sterile room to see a doctor. i remembered that i had my breath and yoga and i did downward dog and my stress fell away. i feel like i have grown tremendously since i was first introduced to yoga, and i feel very lucky to say that it is mostly from within.
