siobhan and isabellagratitude

that is a word that goes with the month of november and thanksgiving. i feel like it is a bit cheesy to bring this up but i think we all need reminding to be grateful for what we have and for the people in our lives. especially for our families. now for some of us family does not necessarily mean our blood relatives. it can mean your close friends too. whatever your definition of family, be grateful they are there.

we tend to take our families for granted. we assume they will always be there when we need them and isn’t that the point of a family? the problem comes when we don’t show gratitude for that support which can then bring resentment. in general we tend to be nicer to strangers then to our family. when we are stressed or tired we all tend to “snap” at our family but that same mood and face an acquaintance we will more than likely be very respectful.

now my husband will say, "if i can’t just be myself with you who can i be myself with?" i do understand that thinking but it is when we only show that grumpy/unpleasant side and never apologize for it that our close relationships suffer.

gathering with our families for holidays like thanksgiving can be stressful but try to take your yoga practice to these gatherings. focus on your breath as you notice the irritation rise, notice also are you in the present moment or have you been transported back in time? then find something about the particular source that you are grateful for. we all have a specific “dance” that we enter when we interact with our families, for me and one family member (i had this realization in college) it was small talk then an argument. when i realized this pattern or "dance" i was the one who had to change the steps. it was hard and a bit bumpy but now we have a much better relationship and i can actual discuss what is going on in my life and no argument ensues.

so, i encourage you to use gratitude as a sort of theme for november and be sure your gratitude extends to those closest to you. they may drive you crazy at times but then again you probably drive them crazy too. thank goodness my husband is willing to put up with me as much as i am willing to put up with him!

many blessings to you and your families,

siobhan troy-carranza

as a kid during the time (brief) i was in gymnastics there wasn't much that came naturally – i wasn't very strong, i wasn't very flexible, but i wasn't bad at balance – so the balance beam rapidly became my favorite part of class. recently at a workshop by doug swenson he mentioned different people use different traits – depending on what their strengths are – more than others. if we are flexible we may need to use less strength or vs. versa. if we have good balance perhaps we can use less technique. he sees an interplay of strength, flexibility, balance, technique and confidence play out in each different person depending on their body type and experience. of course all of these aspects can improve over time, but thinking about what areas you are best at and rely on the most heavily can be an interesting self discovery – on and off the mat. having broken my toe this summer i became hyper aware of my balance. something that had been a strength wasn't there for me as i had relied on it in the past. it can be funny how we put bits of our own identity into our strengths and weakness. i had to face a challenge i wasn't used too. "sure i have tight hamstrings – but balance – balance is something i am good at!" my 'yoga' practice for much of the summer was taking a deep breath and letting go of what "what i could do before" in a yoga pose off the mat - admitting i needed a ride to the bus stop or other help. as my toe is healing and my balance comes back it is amazing to see how resilient our bodies can be. it is also good to come back into my yoga practice with a firmer sense of what my naturally weaker areas are – both the physical and the mental ones.

i am so thrilled and lucky to have found tranquil space bethesda. when i first came to tranquil space bethesda, i was feeling very stressed from my constantly busy schedule. i was looking for yoga classes to help me relax and calm myself. i have been practicing yoga for a year now and have found that i am better able to relax and deal with my stressful days. the flexible class schedule fits in perfectly with my busy life. i like the options of the class passes to meet my schedule for that particular month. the teachers are very professional and encouraging. i find that the space is calming and comfortable, and the readings are inspirational. in addition, the workshops are fun, informative and interesting. the yoga classes have brought more calm and peace in my life. it’s easy for me to come to practice knowing how relaxed and centered my mind will be afterwards. it’s been a great experience. thanks to everyone who makes this possible.
