"the
courageous thing to do may be to
run or walk, or it may be to
stand your ground. what is
important to remember is that we
must maintain our compassion.
whether we stand our ground or
turn and run, we don’t need to
let hate and malice have their
way with us. compassion can be
present in any situation."
- spiritual journeys along the
yellow brick road by darren john
main
these days it seems to get
harder and harder to maintain
compassion in every situation,
but maybe people have always
felt that way. i try to practice
standing my ground, of course
there are times that i should
but it is easier to let someone
else have their way. the problem
is later i either am annoyed at
myself and/or resent the other
person. when it would be better
served to have compassion for
myself, realize the choice i
made and learn from it.
as far as running or walking
away there have been many times
that i have done just that and
it was the smart choice. but to
then also maintain compassion in
a situation that you feel
threatened or vulnerable? that
can be the most challenging
thing in my opinion we can ask
of ourselves. but if our journey
on our path was smooth sailing i
guess we would not learn very
much and i do believe we are all
here to learn. the purpose of
each of our lives is to learn
but, as i have said before, we
probably don’t know what the
lessons are meant to teach us.
the lessons are different for
each of us and while in the
midst of a challenging situation
to then remember to have
compassion for ourselves and
others…
well, take a deep breath and
know that when we show
compassion we do impact those
around us. you may not see that
impact immediately but what goes
around comes around and in your
next “lesson” you will then
experience compassion from
someone else. so, for your
halloween month let your treat
for yourself and others be to
show compassion no matter the
situation.

do i am honored to have been
chosen as team player of the
month and to be a part of the
tranquil space community. i was
introduced to tranquil space
bethesda by geri smith, a
teacher at the studio who also
happens to be my wife. before
coming to tranquil space
bethesda, i was a long-time
practitioner of the martial
arts. i began studying karate
when i was eight years old. the
school was very modest, with
classes being conducted in the
basement of the instructor’s
house. nevertheless, besides
outstanding instruction that
school unquestionably had "it"—a
certain indescribable
quality—and i continued studying
there until i left for college.
during the nearly two decades
that have since passed, i have
tried many other schools and
have come to realize just how
elusive that quality is.
geri had been encouraging me to
try yoga at tranquil space for
quite some time, and i finally
relented about six months ago.
i’m glad i did. the classes at
tranquil space bethesda are
wonderfully challenging, the
teachers are excellent, and the
fellow yogis are a treat to be
around. i was thrilled to become
a studio assistant a few months
after starting so i could give
back to the studio in a more
meaningful way. thank you to
siobhan and to everyone in the
tranquil space community for
making this studio such a great
place to work and to practice. i
am happy to say that tranquil
space bethesda certainly has
"it."

i’m very happy that i
found tranquil space
bethesda. i had been
searching for a long
time to find a yoga
practice to match my
schedule needs, not even
imagining that there
could be one that would
be such a great fit. so,
since january i’ve been
happily re-entering the
practice of yoga. i love
the fact that you can
attend any class, any
time since in my life
that arrangement is the
only one that can work
for now! everyone i’ve
met is supportive and
skilled in helping
develop a yoga that
strengthens the body and
calms and centers the
mind. the space and
ambiance of the candles,
music and readings are
all details that i love
for my spirit. i feel
very blessed to have
found this home for my
practice. i am deeply
grateful and happy.
thanks so all who make
this possible!
