depending on your perspective september can mean back to school or a time to experience a change in seasons. it can still mean warm days, but it will hopefully also bring some cooler nights. september can be on the hectic side, with the idea of summer and vacation being behind us and getting back into the swing of our "normal" routine. what can be fun is to change up that routine a bit. we all have our favorite classes we like to attend or our usual route to work, our set times we do certain tasks. we become very attached to these routines, and while having boundaries is a good thing, like not saying yes to those late evening meetings, it is also good to change things around.

as the fall approaches try changing up your routine and see if it gives you a new perspective. try a new class — if you have taken yoga 1 for a while, maybe it is time to explore yoga 2. and what better way than on septemer 16, with our core strength workshop? or have you ever tried meditation? a meditation practice can seem very elusive, but why not venture out of your comfort zone and try it on september 17, with our introduction to mindful meditation?

now, your yoga practice is not the only place you can change up routines but it can be a "safe" place to start. any change can be very scary, but if we don't try new things we are selling ourselves short. how can we grow as individuals and enhance the lives of others if we don't test our edges? if we become too attached to our usual way of doing things, how do we really know that it is the "best" way? we don't, unless we are willing to take some risks — "only the person who risks is truly free." even thinking about situations or ideas from someone else's perspective is a way to change things up. who knows — you might learn something completely new about yourself, your own courage, and maybe even those around you.

below is a poem that i read and used during a commencement speech back in college at the university of texas, which is a time we are expected to take risks. why is it that as we get older we expect less of that in ourselves?

to laugh is to risk appearing the fool
to weep is to risk being called sentimental
to reach out to another is to risk involvement

to expose feelings is to risk showing your true self
to place your ideas and your dreams before the crowd is to risk being called naïve

to love is to risk not being loved in return
to live is to risk dying
to hope is to risk despair and,
to try is to risk failure

but risks must be taken
the greatest risk in life is to risk nothing
the person who risks nothing . . . does nothing, has nothing, and becomes nothing

he may avoid suffering and sorrow
but he simply cannot learn and feel and change and grow and love and live
chained by his servitude, he is a slave
he has forfeited his freedom

only the person who risks is truly free.

teacher feature

gina tauschek

gina tauschekthis picture was taken when i was around two years old. my family found it quite amusing that if they said, "go do gina ballerina," i would drop whatever it was i was doing, waddle over to the nearest flat surface, place my hands on it and raise my leg. from the look on my face i don't look like i minded all that much! in this piece, i wanted to talk a bit about grace and at least for me that always conjures up an image of a ballet dancer, so i thought the picture was fitting.

although ballerinas have a tremendous amount of bodily grace that's not the definition i had in mind. in fact, i think the meaning of grace is actually a very subjective thing. for me, it is an inner radiance when the mind, body and spirit have found a sense of harmony and they sing. it is not necessarily constant, but we all have them, these moments of grace.

a few weeks ago i was listening to a song and a particular lyric caught my attention, it went "i need your grace to remind me to find my own." i remember thinking what an amazing relationship that would truly be. to have someone else's grace in your life — not to complete you or fix you or tell you what to do, but to simply remind you that you need to find your own.

the more i thought about it, i realized that the lyric wasn't just applicable to romantic relationships. i encounter other people's grace every time i take my seat as a teacher in every single class. i see it in the powerful warrior two, the fluid movement of the sun salutation, and the serenity of tree pose. my students' inner grace shines, and not only am i honored to be in their presence, but i am reminded how important it is to find my own.

which of course brings me to my own yoga mat and again back to my song lyric. my yoga practice is my constant reminder to keep pursuing my own inner grace. there are those moments in practice . . . and i think most people can relate when you get a glimpse of what it really feels like to have your inherent brilliance shine through, where you are content to just be. it's at those times i feel the grace that yoga offers me and it is what keeps me coming back to my mat week after week.

everyone's experience is going to be different, but i do challenge you to take some time and think about where you might encounter grace. do you let it just pass you by, or do you use it as a reminder to reconnect with your own inner radiance? that potential is in everyone, regardless of size, shape, sex, or age. if you don't believe me, take a look at the toddler in the picture. "swan lake" was never in her future, but she was on her way to a very blissful warrior three! namaste.

yukari kunisueyukari kunisue

my name is yukari and i am one of the devotees of the tranquil space bethesda / siohban clan. you might have seen me both in the dupont and bethesda studios. i joined tranquil space bethesda few weeks after the current location opened. thanks to my dear friend and another devotee beth, i found tranquil space — or tranquil space found me. yoga practice and daily meditation along with different forms of athletic exercises are a very important part of my spiritual journey. being a recently separated single mom, older ph.d. student online, and full-time researcher at a government agency, my daily life tends to be fragmented and scattered. my time practicing yoga helps me to stay as one integrated being. i just love the sensation of rebirth every time i go through surya namaskar.

i have been practicing yoga in japan and china for about four years. let me shake your hand or hug you next time you see me!
